The unique maple leaf crest of the 2016 World Cup of Hockey Team Canada jersey is incorporated on the right side of the mask, and an image collage of Canadian music icons, The Tragically Hip adorn the left. In May, 2016 The Tragically Hip announced that lead vocalist and lyricist Gord Downie had been diagnosed with a primary brain tumour, and that the band would tour Canada that summer. Inspired by the band's record-setting performances, Braden commissioned the design of this mask after being selected to Team Canada following his remarkable Vezina Trophy-winning season. As the tournament approached, Braden came up with the plan to offer this one of a kind mask for auction to fans across Canada and the world with the hope of raising funds for a charity of Mr. Downie's choice. Braden was honoured that the Tragically Hip's iconic frontman - a massive hockey fan himself - accepted the offer, and that this unique mask will go live on auctions.nhl.com during the September 20 game between Canada and USA. The proceeds from the auction will support two foundations, The Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre https://donate.sunnybrook.ca/braincancerresearch where Mr. Downie has received treatment, and the Gord Downie Secret Path Fund for Truth and Reconciliation https://give.umanitoba.ca/nctr supporting a program to educate and preserve the historical significance of Canada's abolished First Nations Residential Schools program.
Braden and The Tragically Hip both encourage and are thankful for any donations to either of these funds for fans who cannot participate in the auction bidding.
This unique mask has, and will be worn in practice and any game-action Braden Holtby takes on during the 2016 World Cup of Hockey Tournament. As such the condition of the mask cannot be guaranteed as the same at the time of the auction listing. The mask was designed and painted by Swedish artist David Gunnarsson at DaveArt Studios.
